Powerful cold-season gusts caused walls to collapse upon flimsy tents housing Palestinians uprooted by war in Gaza, claiming the lives of no fewer than four people. This tragedy underscores the dangerous living conditions that persist after over two years of devastating bombardment and severe shortages of aid.

Ceasefire Provides Little Respite from Severe Weather

Although a truce has been in effect since October, humanitarian organizations report that residents do not have the sufficient housing required to withstand recurring winter storms.

Officials at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which took in the bodies, reported on Tuesday that the dead were two women, a girl, and a male adult.

Separately, the local health authority stated on the same day that a one-year-old boy succumbed of extreme cold during the night.

"The world has allowed us to experience death in all its forms," stated Bassel Hamouda following the funeral. "It’s true the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Shelter Collapse

As per Shifa hospital, three members of a single family — elderly a man, his 15-year-old relative, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an eight-metre tall wall fell onto their dwelling in a coastal area of Gaza City. No fewer than five additional people were hurt in the incident.

Family members on Tuesday began clearing the debris that had entombed their loved ones and reconstructing the tent shelters for survivors.

Aid Distribution and Continuing Emergency

United Nations agencies and its humanitarian partners were handing out shelter kits, plastic sheeting, warm covers and clothes as well as food and hygiene supplies across Gaza, said the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

Most of the population live in makeshift shelters since their houses were turned into rubble during the war. Humanitarian organizations contend not enough building supplies are reaching Gaza under the ceasefire.

Casualty Figures After the Ceasefire

Local health authorities, part of the administration, reports more than 440 individuals have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their remains brought to hospitals after the ceasefire went into effect. The authority maintains detailed casualty data that are considered largely accurate by UN agencies and independent experts.

James Elder, representing the UN children’s agency Unicef, said on that day that at least 100 children under the age of 18 – sixty males and 40 females – had been killed after the ceasefire started due to armed actions, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, air raids, tank shelling and employment of bullets. Those figures, he said, represented cases where enough information had been gathered to justify recording, but the overall count is believed to be greater. He added that many hundreds of children had been injured.

"While 'bombings and gunfire have slowed' during the truce, they have not ceased," Elder informed journalists at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video link from Gaza City. "So what the world now terms quiet would be viewed as a crisis anywhere else," he said.

Third Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s population of over 2 million individuals has been fighting to fend off the cold weather and storms at bay while facing shortages of humanitarian aid and a lack of sturdier transitional shelter, which is badly needed throughout the winter months. It’s the 3rd cold season after the war between Israel and Hamas began on a date in late 2023, when militants stormed into southern Israel and killed approximately twelve hundred individuals and abducted two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.

The local health authority reports more than seventy-one thousand four hundred people have been killed in the subsequent retaliatory offensive.
