Administration officials disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, making good on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson noted that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services used by the public and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.
