US President Trump Touches Down in UK for Unprecedented Repeat State Visit Amid Demonstrations Assemble in Windsor
Donald Trump has landed in the UK preceding what marks his repeat state visit, an event described as historic in modern diplomatic relations.
The president and his wife Melania touched down on Tuesday evening at Stansted Airport aboard Air Force One. Their itinerary features events over the next two days, including meetings with King Charles, military parades, and a possible flypast by the Red Arrows together with UK and US F-35 fighter aircraft.
Protests Erupt In Opposition to Trump’s Policies and Rhetoric
Trump’s arrival has triggered backlash from multiple groups in the UK, with the Stop Trump Coalition organizing a protest in Windsor on Tuesday and planning another public gathering in central London on Wednesday.
A leading official accused the US president of fanning the flames of divisive, far-right politics around the globe in recent years.
The critic stated that Trump’s use of the military in US cities and targeting of minorities resembled tactics taken from the authoritarian’s handbook.
He emphasized that while maintaining good relations with the US is pragmatic, the UK must be willing to speak out against a leader who promotes divisive policies.
Ceremonial Welcome and Protest Scenes
Upon arrival, the presidential couple were greeted by US protocol officials and a royal envoy representing the monarch. The foreign secretary was among those in attendance to meet the president.
The first couple then boarded Marine One, the presidential helicopter, which departed shortly following their arrival. They were expected to proceed to Winfield House in Regent’s Park.
Meanwhile, around 70 demonstrators assembled outside Windsor Castle, holding signs and shouting phrases such as “Trump out” and “Donald Trump not welcome here”.
A protester commented, “It is necessary to demonstrate that we oppose what is occurring in the world right now.”
Another individual expressed dismay at the government’s decision to offer such a lavish welcome, calling it “repulsive” and questioning whether Trump merited such unprecedented treatment.
Ceremonial Activities and Military Displays
King Charles and Camilla are set to greet the Trumps with a ceremonial welcome at Windsor Castle, featuring artillery honors discharged simultaneously in Windsor and at the Tower of London.
UK defense authorities confirmed that this would be the largest guard of honour provided during a state visit, with approximately 1,300 armed forces members and 120 horses participating.
The occasion will also include a carriage procession to the castle, accompanied by the household cavalry, and a Beating Retreat ceremony—the first time such an act has been performed for a state visit.
A lavish state banquet includes performances by multiple musical groups, such as the a royal musical unit and pipers from the Scots Guards.
Divided Opinions and Future Engagements
Although many protested, a few expressed approval for the US president’s visit. An attendee stated that his presence could help in brokering global stability and reinforcing global partnerships.
Another local admitted that while staying away from demonstrations, they felt the protests reflected the opinions of the most in the UK, stating that the state visit seemed designed to placate Trump rather than represent public sentiment.
The president is set to travel to the official retreat of the UK prime minister on Thursday, with military aviators positioned along the route upon his arrival.
