United Nations Ends Restrictions on Syrian President Prior to Presidential Visit
The UN Security Council gave the green light to an American proposal ending penalties on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria prior to his Washington trip the coming week.
Sharaa was named provisional head of state following his leadership in an insurgent campaign that drove out the former president in the final month of 2024, concluding thirteen long years of domestic strife.
The US representative to the UN Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "a strong political signal" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a different period" after Assad's removal.
Previously, he faced UN sanctions in his role as head of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which was formerly linked to the extremist organization. Washington eliminated HTS from a list of foreign terror groups in July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
The UN also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.
The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of the sanctions, posting on social media: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and allied countries for backing the country and its population."
Upcoming White House Meeting
President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday occurs subsequent to President Trump remarked that Sharaa achieved "significant advancement" working toward stability to the war-torn country.
The pair met initially during May, during Trump's Riyadh trip during a visit to the Middle East.
After that meeting, the US president described Sharaa as a "tough guy" having a "formative history".
His Islamist group HTS was al-Qaeda's affiliate within Syria until he severed ties back in 2016.
Prior United States Journey
Monday's visit does not represent Sharaa's first trip to the US this year. In September, he emerged as the first Syrian leader to speak before the global assembly at UN headquarters after approximately sixty years.
In his speech, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place among the nations of the world" and demonstrated unity with the people of Gaza.
