UK Expands Methanol Toxicity Warning Roster with 11 Nations
The UK Foreign Office has included an additional eleven more nations to its travel warning register about the dangers of toxic alcohol poisoning from contaminated beverages.
The updated advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a worldwide rise in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol toxicity.
Only a few weeks ago, the government had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, following several high-profile events like the tragic loss of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being cautions that as little as small amounts of industrial alcohol can result in blindness or fatality within 12 to 48 hrs.
What is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?
Toxic alcohol is a toxic chemical typically used in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This chemical is not designed for human consumption.
While it is naturally produced during the production of beverages, commercial firms lower it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the purification method.
Yet in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to reduce expenses, and because it is tasteless and smell-free, it is very difficult to detect.
Official Recommendations for Travelers
Foreign Office official a senior official said that each tourist should be aware of the indicators of methanol toxicity.
"When you are consuming alcohol abroad, opt for well-known venues and steer clear of homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," the official advised.
"Should anything feels off, for example a fatigue that's far more intense than typical or blurred eyesight – get medical help fast."
