Top US Lawman Wears LFC Necktie at Senate Session

The nation's top FBI official Kash Patel appeared in front of the Senate judicial panel on Tuesday sporting a tie displaying the logo of EPL side Liverpool.

Social Media Buzz

His accessory selection drew questions on social media. For one thing, it is extremely rare for a public figure to wear a tie featuring the logo of a business or sports team. For another, Patel has never openly declared support for Liverpool in the past—that is not in words.

However, he has been pictured wearing Liverpool ties on no fewer than two distinct instances. The first was on 12 December 2024, when Patel was visiting lawmakers on Capitol Hill after Donald Trump’s election victory. Back then, he was speculated to be entering the government. The second occurred roughly five months later, on 9 April 2025, at a media briefing announcing the arrest of narcotics suspects by US authorities.

Multiple Ties

Notably, the necktie used on Tuesday was distinct from the earlier one. Previous version had thick stripes and a discrete logo, while the newer tie boasted narrower bands and a more prominent emblem—known as the “heritage tie”.

His apparent owns multiple Liverpool ties implies that his choice is deliberate.

Heated Hearing

At Tuesday’s hearing, the mood became contentious on several occasions. Patel had a shouting match with US senators Cory Booker and Adam Schiff. He stood by his leadership of the FBI, his firing of veteran staff involved in investigations concerning the January 6 events, and a tweet in which he announced that a person of interest was in detention for the killing of right-wing figure Charlie Kirk—a statement that proved premature.

“I do not consider it an error,” Patel told the committee. “I see it as cooperating with the people to identify that there was a individual in detention.”

Ideological Divide

Should Patel actually support Liverpool, it would symbolize a stark clash of ideological loyalties. Being among the US’s foremost law enforcement officers, Patel has been a visible representative of a second Trump administration that has used authoritarian methods to impact various areas of society.

This includes operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in public places that have resulted in the detention of many of immigrants regardless of their residency or nationality. It also includes the dispatching of federal agents to liberal US cities in due to alleged higher offense levels—claims that have been disproven.

Liverpool’s Ethos

Liverpool, by contrast, is known to be one of the more progressive clubs in Europe, from one of the most liberal cities in the UK.

Famous Liverpool coach Bill Shankly once stated: “I believe the only way to live and to be truly successful is by collective effort, with everyone working for each other, everyone assisting each other, and everyone having a portion of the benefits at the end of the day.”

Though the operations of Liverpool have evolved in modern times, traces of collectivist thinking remain. Former head coach Jürgen Klopp, who guided the club to great success from 2015 to 2024, summed up his personal beliefs by remarking: “When I succeed, I want others to do well, too. One thing I will never do in my life is vote for the conservative party.”

Historical Tensions

The club’s fans also have a significant history of distrust toward law enforcement. A lot of this originates in the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, which took the lives of 97 Liverpool fans. At first, police blamed the supporters of violence and intoxication. Years later, independent inquiries found that the crowd crush was due to serious failures by police, who had deceived the people to shift responsibility.

Patel’s History

Patel gained attention after the incidents of 6 January 2021, when he promoted a legal aid initiative for those detained in relation to the Capitol breach. A career prosecutor and legal aide to right-wing politicians, Patel leveraged his ties with the first Trump administration to pursue business ventures and a media career. In both capacities, he promoted multiple conspiracy theories, including discredited assertions of election fraud and misleading information about Covid-19 vaccines.
