New York City Mayor Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced his plan to support former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite months of disagreements between the pair of Democrats.
A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations
Just last month, the mayor had publicly condemned Cuomo, calling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and accusing him of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a new development, Adams changed his position, revealing he now plans to support Cuomo in communities where he holds significant backing.
“I think that it is imperative to energize the communities of color that have been affected by urban displacement on how vital this election is,” Adams remarked.
Adams continued, “They have watched their rents increase due to gentrification and they have been overlooked in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and talk directly with organizers and organizations and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those areas and get them involved.”
Race Dynamics and Current Developments
The election battle has so far been dominated by the competition between the former governor and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose increasing popularity has drawn interest globally and represented aspirations for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.
In a latest mayoral debate, both Mamdani and GOP candidate his conservative opponent declared they would reject the mayor's support if extended.
Earlier this year, the mayor had launched his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dismissed in exchange for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across the city.
During a separate media briefing on Thursday, the mayor answered reporters inquiring into the endorsement plan by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together this evening.”
This development came a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ first game at the famous arena, which occurred right after a contentious mayoral debate.
