National Agents Begin Immigration Crackdown in Charlotte
Federal agents have descended on the Democratic-run city as part of the federal government's growing crackdown on unauthorized immigration, according to authority reports.
The campaign, dubbed "Charlotte's Web Operation", was revealed on the weekend, with officials stating that "undocumented criminals" would be targeted in the city.
"Our department is deploying DHS law enforcement to this location to protect American citizens and eliminate security risks," an official representative stated.
City authorities, including Mayor of Charlotte Li Vyles, issued a joint statement condemning the operation, saying it was causing "unwarranted anxiety and confusion" in the resident base.
Tactical Approach
Armoured vehicles and tactical squads could be involved in the North Charlotte operation, according to internal government documents.
Several church members doing yard work at a eastern Charlotte church retreated to wooded areas when authorities descended, with one man being apprehended, according to witness statements.
"We thought church was safe and no incidents would occur," a young bystander commented.
Political Context
Since the presidential term renewal, federal authorities have been sent to multiple cities including Washington DC, Los Angeles and Chicago to fulfill the pledge of "an unprecedented removal initiative" in US history.
The federal agency said they are conducting the campaign because the state has not complied with the around 1,400 ICE detainees, meaning they had been freed due to "sanctuary policies".
Municipal Classification
The city is not a sanctuary city - cities that have measures in place to limit the assistance given to government enforcement - but it is a "certified welcoming city". This is a formal designation for cities that are focused on diversity acceptance.
"Federal officials will intervene to defend Americans when municipal leaders decline," authorities announced.
Demographic Context
Charlotte is an ethnically diverse community, with about nearly one-fifth of inhabitants being born outside of the country, according to census information.
DHS has not said how long the raids will persist. The Chicago operation, which started last fall is still ongoing.
Official Response
Recently, Congresswoman Alma Adams said she was notified about the initiative and was "seriously troubled" about Border Patrol and ICE agents coming to this region.
The subsequent location on the federal schedule is set to be New Orleans, according to sources, and that as many as two hundred officers could be dispatched to the location.
Enforcement actions in other municipalities like large metropolitan areas have faced criticism over allegations of overly aggressive tactics.
