Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
