The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast this spring, according to the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The previous season concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
