Great Britain's Wightman Denied Gold as Portuguese Isaac Nader Wins Stunning 1500m Victory

In a dramatic race at the international meet, UK athlete Jake Wightman captured a silver medal in the male 1500m, ending just a fraction behind champion Isaac Nader of the Portuguese team.

Nerve-Wracking Conclusion Sees Nader Push to Victory

Wightman, the former world champion, recorded a time of 3:34.12, barely falling short of the win.

Reigning winner Josh Kerr pulled up during the event and came in final place, visibly in difficulty the whole way.

Bronze for Kenyan Athlete as Favourites Miss Out

Cheruiyot of Kenya took third place with a time of 3.34.25, while his teammate Timothy Cheruiyot finished just outside the medals in 3.34.50.

Strong favourite Netherlands competitor Niels Laros had to settle for fifth place with a time of 3 minutes 34.52 seconds.

Team GB's Neil Gourley placed in tenth position in what was the first global showpiece with the Scottish-born triumvirate following the previous global meet in Qatar.

Medal Outcome:

  • First place: Isaac Nader (Portuguese team) – 3 minutes 34.10 seconds
  • Runner-up: Jake Wightman (Britain) – 3.34.12
  • Bronze: Reynold Cheruiyot (Kenyan squad) – 3.34.25
