American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"These professionals are wearing thin," Sean Duffy told Fox News on Sunday, as certain aircraft were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been missing, leading airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has added to setbacks due to climate and additional factors.

Over three thousand American flights were postponed on Sunday, and the secretary said he expects the circumstances to grow worse.

"I observe the pressure," he said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their concerns firsthand.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, can I secure another source of income to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy added that on the previous day 22 alerts at airports indicated flights would be held up due to a lack of employees - one of the highest since the closure started.

The US government shutdown entered its 26th day on Sunday, rendering it the second-longest shutdown in history.

He has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would reduce the quantity of planes in the sky if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer straightforwardly when questioned if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I require my controllers concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at their households," Duffy said.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at LAX due to staffing shortages, leading to disruption at the fifth-busiest airport in the country and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as additional travel extending north to the metropolis of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert went out at 08:45 in the morning on the weekend. Numerous trips were operating normally by midday.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were delayed an average of 82 minutes due to personnel issues, and the FAA indicated DFW, the second most active airport in the country, could encounter difficulties from reduced staff later in the day.

The agency warned passengers in California to consult airlines about revised departure times.

The issue comes ahead of the third match of the World Series, which is scheduled in LA on Monday night, and approximately four weeks before the Thanksgiving break, one of the busiest periods to travel by air in the United States.

Strain on US air travel contributed to ending a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the shutdown had reached its fifth week and affected flight services, including aviator instruction.

It prompted a number of air traffic controllers to remain absent on the same day on January 25, 2019, briefly halting travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, the former president, who at the period was in his first term as president, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, bringing an end to the government shutdown after 35 days.
