An Story of Unexpected Kindness: When a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Floor
Back in the year 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. My plan was to arrange lodging upon arrival, but when I arrived, a large conference was happening and all the backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.
As a visitor from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of just sleep at the terminal – but quickly found that airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes 24 hours. With no idea how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I boarded public transport and began walking near a gaming venue, believing I could pass the night somewhere operating through the night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition for nailing a crucial interview the next morning, but as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
The world needs more individuals who show such kindness.
Apparently, I appeared out of place since a female student saw me loitering in the city center and asked if I was OK. I shared my predicament and right away she said I could crash on a spare mattress at her university residence at the local university – a perfect solution, considering that was where my medical school interview was scheduled for the next day. She even offered some food: a leftover sandwiches she brought back her work shift. This gave me the bathroom and a secure location and safe for the evening.
Looking back, it’s clear to me the significant risk she took as a woman allowing a male stranger she’d just met sleep on her floor. Back then I was in my own unawareness and did not consider to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I am astonished she took that chance – and remain deeply appreciative.
I didn’t end up attending that university, and I lost touch with her again, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of human compassion. My sincere desire is that life has returned her good deed tenfold. We could all use more people with such compassion.
